  1. ReadMe for Acorn RISC OS 3.70 and StrongARM Processor

  6. This ReadMe file provides extra information on RISC OS 3.70 and
  7. the StrongARM processor, not covered in the printed documentation. 
  8.  
  9. The Manuals directory contains the RISC OS User Guide ,read
  10. using Bookworm, and the StrongARM Programmers' Application Note.
  11.  
  12. The Replay directory contains a !ReadMe describing the more
  13. advanced feature of the Replay software supplied.
  14.  
  15. It is particularly important that you check this ReadMe for any
  16. patches or fixes that need to be made.
  17.  
  18.   1) Patches - a list of the application incompatibilities that can be
  19.   readily fixed by applying the supplied patches.
  20.  
  21.   2) SSound - a warning
  22.  
  23.   3) Compatibility - a list of Acorn applications and hardware expansions that
  24.   are known to work, or not to work, with RISC OS 3.70 and StrongARM.

  29. 1) Patches
  30. ----------

  32. Here is a list of the patches supplied with the RISC OS 3.7 upgrade. These
  33. fix compatibility problems either with RISC OS 3.7 or with the StrongARM
  34. processor. You can find the patches in the Utilities.Patches directory after
  35. performing the upgrade.
  36.  
  37. In general, it is wise to make sure you have a backup of any items before
  38. applying the patches.

  40. Advance
  41.  
  42. To patch Advance 1.01 for RISC OS 3.7, run the !Patch application, and drag
  43. your copy of !Advance onto the !Patch icon.

  45. PocketFS
  46.  
  47. To patch PocketFS 2.03 for RISC OS 3.7, run the !Patch application, and drag
  48. your copy of !PocketFS onto the !Patch icon.

  50. ansilib
  51.  
  52. A new version of ansilib for those with the Acorn C/C++ toolkit. See the
  53. ReadMe file in Utilities.Patches.ansilib.

  55. CallASWI
  56.  
  57. A support module for backward compatibility with older versions of RISC OS.
  58. You do not need this item unless you are writing software for release. See
  59. Utilities.Patches.CallASWI.ReadMe for details.

  61. SCSIDM

  63. A version of ScsiDM relinked to work with StrongARM. See the ReadMe file in
  64. Utilities.Patches.SCSIDM

  68. The new components required to patch !SparkFS 1.27 for use with StrongARM.

  77. 2) SSound - warning

  80. If you try to use a version of SSound earlier than Vs. 0.24 on a StrongARM
  81. machine, it will crash - don't  panic! Vs. 0.24 of SSound is supplied in 
  82. Utilities.patches.SSound.

  86. 3) Compatibility
  87. ----------------

  89. Here is a list of Acorn applications and hardware that are known to work - or not
  90. to work - with StrongARM and RISC OS 3.7, together with any details of
  91. possible upgrades. More up to date information may be available on the ART
  92. web pages ( see http://www.art.acorn.co.uk/ ).

  94. Acorn C/C++ - works on StrongARM. A new version of ansilib for StrongARM is
  95. supplied in Utilities.Patches (remember, ansilib is _not_ for production
  96. code).

  98. Advance 1.01 - works on RISC OS 3.70 after patching.

  100. TCP/IP Release 2 - works on StrongARM, after patching the protocol modules.

  103. OmniClient - works on StrongARM.

  105. AUN Level 4 - works on StrongARM.

  107. PocketFS - version 2.03 works on StrongARM, after patching with
  108. Utilities.!Patch.

  110. PCx86 - versions 1.91 or later have been tested and confirmed as working.
  111. Upgrades are available free of charge from the Acorn FTP site, or at low
  112. cost via dealers (as product code ACA54).

  114. DTP - does not work on StrongARM
  115.  
  116. First Word Plus - does not work on StrongARM
  117.  
  118. Ethernet cards - cards that have been purchased from i-cubed Ltd directly,
  119. or i-cubed cards that have been Acorn badged should work correctly. ANT
  120. cards that have been bought from Atomwide Ltd, or Acorn badged ANT cards
  121. will require a ROM upgrade. This applies to both 'NIC' and 'Podule'
  122. variants. Please refer to your dealer for further information about upgrades
  123. to these or the situation regarding other manufacturers' cards.

  128. 9) Troubleshooting
  129. ------------------

  131. In case you encounter problems, here is a list of symptoms, with
  132. probable reasons and remedies.

  135. ** The machine does not show any signs of life
  136.

  140.    * An incompatible expansion card or     Remove all expansion cards and  
  141.      network card is fitted                re-install one at a time to identify

  145. ** The software I want to use does not work

  148.                                            supplied in the new disc installation;
  149.                                            there may be a patch for your software.

  151.                                            Contact the software developer for an
  152.                                            upgrade or patch.

  154.                                            Try turning the cache off (press f12 
  155.                                            and type *cache off), though the
  156.                                            performance is likely to be poor.

  158.                                            The ARM Club are planning to release a 
  159.                                            new software package which will enable 
  160.                                            some software to run on a StrongARM 
  161.                                            which would otherwise be incompatible.
